Artist Statement: Stella Hats for me has become a metaphor to describe my life as an artist.
My first and most important “Hat” is as a jeweler. I studied gold and silversmithing at
SUNY New Paltz 1972-'74. I opened my first shop in Ellenville, NY, moved it to Kingston,
NY until 2004. I now work out of my home in the Hudson Valley.
I still design jewelry using precious and semi precious stones, as well as unique beaded jewelry also.
In the past 10 years I have worn the “Hat” of a hat maker, hand blocking felt and straw.
Blocking hats is like making sculptures for the head.
In 1999 I started exploring silk painting. This is an amazing medium that almost has a mind
of its own. The flowing texture of the dyes on the silk creates a unique piece of art enhancing
the flower and nature themes that inspire me. I paint silk scarves, capes and wall hangings.
These proved to be a great tourist item because it was so easy for me to customize it. This year I discovered the huge variety of fascinating yarns available so I got into knitting scarves and shawls.
I’m also now taking a pottery class and love that. I love learning new crafts and will continue
to explore anything that comes my way.
